This is our GolfGym Swing Tip #3 in the series with Arlen Bento, Jr.

In this video, Arlen takes us into the movement from short back swing to impact then to follow through. You can work on these simple golf fitness and golf swing drills at home or in your office. Great to do with the PowerSwing Trainer too.

All great golfers get into this position as they are moving into impact. Their swings happen so fast that it is difficult to see that position at full speed, but they do it. A really good example of that movement in an exaggerated fashion is Paula Creamer. Here she is already past impact, but believe me, if you have ever seen Paula swing…she definitely gets Scrunched.

Here is a the great Byron Nelson demonstrating the Scrunch that he performed in his swing. Thanks to Historic Golf Photos: www.historicgolfphotos.com for this great image.

So…Scrunch your way to a better swing!

The video below demonstrates a simple and fun drill to help you “Feel” your golf swing moving from a short takeaway to a strong follow through. This unique drill was designed by Arlen Bento, Jr. many years ago and he has used it to help new golfers as well as those of us who have been playing golf for most of our lives.

The drill is easy to do, but takes some concentration and may need a few “tries” to get the correct feel. This will help with balance, body movement, club position at impact and getting to your finished potition. We use a golf club, then the PowerSwing Trainer (for resistance). This drill can really help to build a strong base for your complete swing and a great ball striking platform.

Go ahead and watch the video, have fun and “feel” the results. By the way, this was my first time doing the exercise/drill and it was fun.

This drill is easy to do at home or on the range. Give it a try and you will see what I mean about being a little bit of a challenge with a good feeling outcome.

Arlen Bento, Jr. has been involved in golf in some way or another for many many years, either as the Head Golf Professional at PGA Village, Pine School high school golf team coach, club fitter, golf sales and much more. Over those years he has developed some very unique and very effective golf drills and teaching techniques that he has passed along to his golf students.

It has always been a challenge demonstrating golf fitness techniques and exercises to golfers, hoping they will employ them consistently to reap the benefits. However, it is difficult for most golfers to see the benefit of a movement pattern or exercise if it isn’t tied directly to their swing. With Arlen, I think we can bridge that gap.

The following is the first of many tips and drills that we created together. With Arlen’s years of experience, and using GolfGym products, we should be able to bring you just what you need to get better at this game which, more importantly, will help you enjoy the game more.

So let’s “Begin With The Follow Through” shall we?

A one piece takeaway is very important to your overall swing performance. Tiger Woods, Brandt Snedeker and every other professional golfer performs a one piece takeaway in their golf swing.

Our friend Tom Patri is the Owner and Founder of TPC Golf LLC and a Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher In America. When I asked him for some input on the subject, he supplied me with the following:

“In my 32 years of teaching and coaching I have seen a wide array of ways to begin ones back swing motion. On tour in the modern golf swing there are two basic starts:

1- The One Piece Takeaway

2- The Early Set

Pre the modern era a third start , the lag load was also a possibility . Today as I teach the average player I’m always trying to make this already difficult game easier for anyone that wanders into my lesson tee. All this being side , the takeaway I lean toward the most with Mr. and Mrs. average player is the one piece start.

Very simply I tell my students if we start the major components (hands , arms and torso) of the backswing away together it stands to reason we are much more likely to return them together . Picture a line drawn across your shoulders and then down each arm finishing at the grip. Basically we are describing a triangle . Your job once the triangle is formed is to get that triangle started in a dead heat !

Work on your one piece takeaway and you’ll be amazed at how much easier contact becomes ! Keep me posted .
Thanks Tom.

These simple drills on the video below will help to prevent your hands and/or arms from taking over in the initiation of the swing. It will engage the upper body more which in turn develops more stability in the lower body

In this video, I will demonstrate the loosey goosey takeaway along with the one piece takeaway, and show you two really easy drills that you can perform every day that will help you to “FEEL” the engagement of your core in the takeaway.

Yes, that seems simple enough, but I want you to try it. If you are performing the drill correctly, you will feel what I am talking about. An added benefit is that by engaging your abdominal muscles in this drill, you will help your lower back as well.

Do you Hit The Golf Ball or Swing The Club? I viewed a great video on YouTube that may help you answer the question. Click Here to see the video:

It is a very good question to ask yourself. I had to ask myself which one I was doing. Obviously, we swing the club in order to hit the ball…but what is running through your head when you swing the club. Are you thinking swing or are you thinking hitting the ball?

I was at a Trade Show several years back when Butch Harmon was giving a presentation. He said “The ball should simply get in the way of a really good swing” (or something like to that)…and he offered a free lesson on an easy way to gain 10 yards in just 10 seconds…”Play from to the white tees”.

But seriously, Butch Harmon was basically telling us that all you’ve got to do is swing the golf club really well and just let the ball get in the way. I know it sounds easy, but heck, what have you got to loose? Maybe, just maybe a few strokes.

About three months ago, I joined a great gym that is about five miles from our home in Stuart, Florida. It’s a Planet Fitness facility. It is a gym with stuff in it…that’s it. That’s all I wanted, and it’s very inexpensive to join. I don’t generally use weight machines, but I do use the treadmill and the elliptical machine. There are lots of free weights and three universal gym stations which I use for pull downs and triceps exercises.

I bring my PowerSwing Trainer and a set of Medium PowerBandz to the gym every day. I have created a very intense and very effective golf fitness routine with the PowerSwing Trainer which involves four sets of twenty-five fast repetitions.

After about ten to fifteen minutes on the treadmill, I perform a dynamic warm up routine involving three movement patterns. I do a few sets of upper body exercises with light free weights and then on to the PowerSwing Trainer. I perform two sets of twenty-five right handed swings with my PST, one set of left handed swings and finish with one more set of twenty-five right handed swings. (Since golf is a one sided dominant sport, I want to make sure I am balancing out the movements). The gym has one entire wall full of mirrors, so I am able to monitor my swing, rotation and posture the entire time. After that routine I am spent. My heart rate is way up and I feel great! This part of my workout takes about ten minutes total. I finish with about four or five PowerBandz exercises and I am done.

Yesterday, I was coming out of the men’s locker room (of course the men’s locker room) and a fellow who looked to be about my age (I turned 63 yesterday) approached me and, without asking my name or saying hello, blurted out, “What’s your swing speed?”. I stopped, paused for a second and said, “I don’t know”. He said he had been watching me with that “rubber thing” and was curious as to my swing speed.

That’s not me and it’s not the locker room at Planet Fitness. This picture is just for effect.

That question got me to thinking. Is it really important that I know what my swing speed is? Will that determine my golf fitness level? Will it make me a better golfer? Will I hit the ball straighter? Will I be more popular at the 19th hole? In my mind the answer to all those questions is…no.

I workout hard to get into the best shape I am capable of (actually for the past two years I have been very sporadic in keeping a consistent workout schedule if at all…until Planet Fitness). I am losing some excess pounds, am hitting the ball better than ever in my life, and enjoying my time on the golf course like never before. If I started to worry about my swing speed, I might not have as much fun.

I will be shooting a video of my workout with the PowerSwing Trainer and posting it next week because I think it will be a benefit to some of you who are looking for an exercise routine that is easy and golf specific.

Having watched several videos with our friend Martin Chuck, inventor of the Tour Striker training club, I have been creating some very specific exercises with the PST to help me get my hands more forward at impact to compress the ball better. So far it is working. I will be posting those too.

So you stay posted, I’ll keep posting and…who cares what our swing speeds are as long as we are enjoying the game and having fun.

“Golf Fitness” – What Is It Really? Part 3
The Mental Game

When we talk about golf fitness, most of us think immediately of our body and how we need to get our muscles in shape, lose weight and look like those pictures we see on the cover of Fitness Magazines. Ah yes!…six pack abs, broad defined shoulders, a 28 inch waist, muscular legs, maybe all your hair shaved off and a Hogan like swing. Yep, that’s what it’s all about. (This is the time where you hear the record getting scratched…unless you’re under 30 and you don’t even know what a record is)

Ok, all kidding aside, we all think of our bodies having to be in shape when the term golf fitness is bantered about. In this Part 3, I want to talk about Mental Fitness and how it is as important as physical fitness if you ever what to really perform well and enjoy the heck out of this game.

A wise man once said, “Golf is played on a five-inch course — the distance between the ears”. That wise man was Bobby Jones, who had to overcome a very bad temper and a loss of focus before his talent was allowed to flourish. This speaks to the importance of the mental side of the game that many professional golfers now address by employing sports psychologists.

Many of the PGA, LPGA, European Tour and Web.com (formerly Nationwide) Tour players have Mental Coaches. Some of the most prominent coaches are Dr.Bob Rotella, Dr. Gio Valiente, Dr. Joseph Parent (Zen Golf), Lynn Marriott & Pia Nillson (Vision 54), Rick Sessinghaus, Dr. Tony Papiro and Dr.Shannon Reece.
There are links below if you want more information on these professionals.

Many Opinions on the Subject!
I belong to several LinkedIn Groups (LinkedIn is sort of like Facebook for business people to connect). The members of the groups are encouraged to start discussions on a topic that would be relevant to the group’s members. One of the groups I belong to is named “A Golf & Business Networking Group”. A man in the group named Jim started a discussion with the question: “What is more important, the mental side of golf or the physical side of golf? Should you be thinking about your target or some aspect of your golf swing?” Great question!

I decided to be the first one to chime in with my opinion and wrote: “Jim, I think they are equally important. You just can’t focus on them simultaneously. The mental side of golf is what gets you to the realization that you have to do something about your physical side. If you can mentally focus on your target, but can’t perform the function and the movement pattern to get you there….frustration sets in. I think that is one of the most common flaws in golfers….massive frustration over the fact that they come to the course with a great attitude, want to have fun, focus on the target…and fire a banana into the next fairway, because they weren’t prepared physically. Thanks for the question. Ken Pierce, GolfGym”

The really great thing about this discussion is that it brought in many members who are Mental Professionals like Dr. Tony Piparo. Here is one of his comments in the discussion:

Tony Piparo • “Both sides are important but shouldn’t be seen as different aspects of the same person, and treated separately. The correct training program teaches golfers how to meld their mind, body, and eyes into a single entity. Trying to train the body without understanding the influence of how we live our lives on golf performance and how the mind works will continue the 60 year trend reported by the USGA. That is, there hasn’t been an iota of improvement in scoring for golfers as a whole. Today’s handicaps are no better than our predecessors of six decades ago. This is true for both men and women, amateurs and pros. This given all the technological advances in equipment, scientific awareness of the biomechanics of the perfect swing for different body types and error detection equipment that pinpoints precisely where an individual golfer’s swing differs from the ideal. What’s the only thing that hasn’t changed in all this time? It’s the way we learn and practice. But help is on the way. See www.targetorientedgolf.com for more info.”

This prompted a comment from Jim Serwan • “Equal but different: Learn the mechanics but play the round with the mental. The more you can leave behind “learned” mechanics on the course the better. A major league pitcher can “learn” how to throw a curve ball in practice but has to “trust” in that ability during the game from the mound by visualizing the results he wants. Meaning that at some point you have to trust that you’re smart enough to learn the swing and that your muscle memory will take over and allow you to get out of your own way when you play. Remember, it’s just a “shot”. Each and every time”.

I had to get back in the discussion after that comment. Here is my response:
“Jim, I agree with you that you have to trust your mechanics and your ability, and simply perform the “shot” each and every time. If it were only that simple this game would be a breeze for everyone who can control their thoughts. Of course, each of our backgrounds and expertise will direct our responses to the question of mental or physical importance. My background is more on the functionality and performance side of the equation which is why I think both are important for peak performance. Golf is a challenging individual game, and because there is a score involved, there will always be a striving for each of us to pen a lower one. If a person just wants to enjoy the outdoors with a good walk and doesn’t really care about the score (I want to meet this person) they would have fun no matter what they score or how many balls they lose. However, the fact that this silly thing called PAR exists on every hole, it cries out for improvement each time you lace up your golf shoes. Just as the pitcher must have good mechanics that are so ingrained that he doesn’t have to think about that part of his performance, so must a golfer have good feelings about his or her swing to be able to trust in the outcome”.

Dr. Shannon Reece commented:
“Great reading all the responses above! Coming from the mental side of the game, my vote is that the mental side is more important in the long run. That being said, if you don’t have a solid foundation in the mechanics of the swing, then no matter how solid your mindset, it will not make up the difference. But if you were to put two players side by side, whose technical games were fairly similar, the one with the resilient mindset would have the higher probability of success under the pressure of competitive play. And one of the most significant aspects of a strong mental game is attitude. You can read more about it here – http://trainingforoptimalperformance.com/in-golf-attitude-is-everything/ Great discussion!”

This exchange went on and on with more and more comments from all types of “professionals” from the golf professional to the mental professional to the golfer and the golf teacher. It pointed out that this game of golf is so complex that scholars can sit around a great table and pontificate about all the variables that need to be lined up neatly in order to hit the perfect shot while in the perfect mood, aiming at the perfect target.

Golf Fitness – What is it Really?…The reality is that golf is supposed to be fun for all who play it, and the “Fitness” aspect of it needs to be developed both physically and mentally to perform at your best. Better performance brings happiness which encourages better performance.

When we talk about golf fitness, it is my guess that 95% of amateur golfers look to the pros as the benchmark for being fit as a golfer. I say this mainly because unless you belong to a Facebook Group called “GolfFitness Pros” or are a certified golf fitness instructor from TPI (Titlelist Performance Institute), there is no other group of golfers to whom we grant as much credibility as the pros.

Touring professionals have mortgages to pay, trophies to accumulate and families to support. They chose golf as their avenue to accomplish those goals. As in any profession, the cream rises to the top and the rewards are greater there.

Therefore, in the Tiger Woods era, tour pros need to step it up to be fit enough to carry those big checks around and to play better, longer and with hope, injury free golf.

Having spent the past several years around some of the most elite coaches on the PGA Tour, I have seen, first hand, how dedicated the “dedicated pros” can be. We see more and more pros on the Golf Channel being highlighted in the gym with their coach demonstrating the exercise routine they go through regularly.

On game day, many of the pros have a light workout and stretch or get stretched before they head to the practice tee. Then after walking 18 holes and handling the mental stress of the round, they head back to the fitness trailer to have a warm down and stretch or be stretched, then head home to rest and prepare to repeat the routine again the next day.

If a golfer looks fit…is that golf fitness? Here are three examples of golfers who have changed their physique through concentrated and guided strength training routines. I say guided, because these golfers are doing exercises and resistance training with coaches or trainers that will specifically help their golf performance, not to compete in a Mr. Whatever competition. This is all about performance on the course and the financial rewards that can be generated.

The most obvious is Tiger Woods.

Tiger’s natural ability was enhanced by all his training. He looks like a tri-athlete.

Next is Lee Westwood:

The difference in his physique is really obvious. He shed some pounds and added some muscles which makes for a great look and better performance overall…and his clothes fit perfectly now.

The third is one of the “Young Guns” Rory McIlroy.
Rory didn’t need to shed any pounds, but his training has paid off in the “clothes fitting better” area.

An argument could be made as to the performance of these three examples. One could say (that sounds so British) that Tiger is erratic, Lee Westwood hasn’t won a Major and Rory missed all kinds of cuts lately. That just shows that golf is a complex game and that fitness is but one component of performance.

I have never witnessed any of their workouts specifically, but do know that in the PGA Tour Fitness trailer the players work with resistance bands, balance balls, weighted balls, lots of stretching and some light weights. There is also a universal gym machine where the cables get a good workout.

None of this is probably big news to you, but my point is that these guys are dedicated to their performance and use golf fitness exercises to enhance that performance.

Oh, I almost forgot! There is one more Professional Golfer who has had a transformation in his physique that is slightly more obvious than the others. It’s John Daly. OK, here is where the question of “Golf Fitness – What is it Really” is thrown for a loop.

John Daly has carried way too many extra pounds during his lifetime, but the question is…Is he Golf Fit? He can rotate farther than most golfers. He can hit the ball farther than most pros (or at least used to) and has no problem walking the 72 holes in a tournament. Is this Golf Fitness? Think about it.

What is Golf Fitness Really?

In Part Three of this series we will explore the mental fitness side of the game. There are many golfers who use mental coaches to help their performance and to stay Golf Fit.

For demonstrations of specific exercises that some of the pros perform please visit GolfGym Exercises.

This is the First of a Five Part Series on Golf Fitness – What Is It Really?

In this digital age, when you want to find information on anything, you go to Google or Wikipedia. Google disseminates all the info out there in cyberspace based on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Rankings, and Wikipedia has information on their website that comes from many sources, but is good enough to get a sense of what you are searching for.

If you Google “Golf Fitness”, just below the paid ads are 461 million entries containing something pertaining to golf fitness. I am very proud to say that at the time of this writing, we (GolfGym) are third from the top on the first page, just below MyTPI. The websites and articles available on Google are as varied in consistency and designation as the variety of cheeses in France. Therefore, with so many articles, golf fitness products, pictures and “stuff”, is that Golf Fitness? The following is straight out of Wikipedia.

Golf fitness is a relatively new concept in the world of professional golfing, but one which is gaining wide currency now. While there is now a mainstream following of this type of training, this wasn’t always the case. Golfers were never considered athletes nor was the sport considered to share the physical demands of other sports like football, baseball or hockey. Not only was it not popular to exercise for golf, but in many cases, it was frowned upon. Australian golfer Greg Norman credits himself with introducing the concept of golf fitness to the golfing world.

Injury tendencies
History has taught us that golfers who do not properly prepare their bodies for repetitive practice or play tend to break down in injury, especially to the back, shoulders and wrists. Common complaints include sore or tender joints, early fatigue and lack of strength, especially as it relates to driving distance.

History of golf fitness
There were some early pioneers of the combination of fitness and golf. Gary Player, an avid fitness enthusiast, is one of the games most avid supporters of fitness on tour.

New era of golf fitness
Gary Player may have been one of golf’s earliest and most vocal supporters, but there were others. Greg Norman was also a huge proponent of the benefits of fitness for his game and his life overall. However, no one has had a greater impact than the most famous golfer in the world, Tiger Woods. His athletic physique is among the most envied by enthusiasts of many different sports. This athletic prowess in addition to his natural talent and ability and mental focus has elevated the game of golf to a whole new level. Golfers now view their game as one that involves their entire body, their fitness and nutrition.”

So, is that Golf Fitness?

Is this golf fitness?

What about this?

Since Tiger Woods became a “force” in golf, the fitness level of nearly all the professional players has gone up a notch, and in some cases has changed entire body types. Twenty years ago, a “Chiseled Golfer” would have been the statue of Ben Hogan at the Colonial Country Club. Now, more and more professional golfers are finding that being more fit can help them earn more money…a lot more money.

So is this Golf Fitness?

I am pretty sure this doesn’t count!

Do you think those are her real clubs?

What is Golf Fitness Really?

In Part Two of this series we will explore this question more deeply. I will point out some of the most notable golfers and offer a few of the exercises that the top players in the world do to stay Golf Fit.

Before you go to the video, I want to bring you up to speed on some of the great things that are happening with Joey, the Academy and the players he is working with.

As most of you know, Joey traveled on the PGA Tour for almost 15 years working with a number of Players over that time. He began his journey with Vijay Singh which lasted for 7 of those years. Then he worked with notable players like Jason Dufner, Ryuji Imada, Pat Perez, Charlie Wi and several others.

Because his Academy is in Jupiter, and because many of the top players in the world are living in Jupiter, he is working with many more Tour Players than ever before. Most notably, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Cameron Tringale and LPGA Tour player Alison Walshe. Am I name dropping…certainly! My point is that Joey’s expertise is sought out by the best players on the planet, so when he offers information you know it is the best possible available.

This video shows the same routines that he incorporates with the players. Try this set of warm ups. It will really help you get the most out of your round.

As a reminder, Joey has a new DVD out called “Golf Body 1″. It is available at Joey D Golf or at GolfGym.

Incorporate these movement patterns into your fitness routine for better performance and more enjoyment of the game we love.

While checking the GolfGym Twitter page this morning, I came across an article written by Coach Calorie titled, “How Much Exercise to Lose Weight – Not That Much”. Given that I am slightly calorically challenged myself…I was drawn to the article.

It illuminates the fact that in our endeavoring to lose weight… too much exercise can in fact be detrimental to the outcome you are seeking. He writes:

“When it comes to dieting and trying to determine how much exercise to lose weight, a “less is more” approach is warranted. Can you lose weight working out 6 days a week alternating strength training with cardio? Absolutely. Is it necessary? Not at all.

Focus your workouts around what’s going to give you the biggest return on your time and effort. Cardio will burn some calories, but it’s not needed to lose weight. Strength training, on the other hand, is mandatory for successful fat loss.”

There are two reasons for sharing this article:

1. Many golfers (including me) can afford to lose a few lb’s…if you know what I mean. So, this information is helpful.

2. This idea carries over into working on your “Golf Body” (as Coach Joey D calls it) and becoming “Golf Fit”.

Getting “Golf Fit” should be thought of the same way. It doesn’t take much to start a program and begin to see results on the golf course fairly quickly. Some simple exercises and stretches can go a long way to playing better golf. Programs loaded with too many/too difficult exercises turn off most golfers.

The bigger message here is that if you are trying to lose weight or get a little more fit for golf, make it simple to start and build it up as you gain confidence and strength. You will definitely see the results on the scale and on the golf course.

At GolfGym, we try to make it simple…and with Coach Joey D, we make it easy to follow and it makes sense.

You can read the entire article by Coach Calorie at: http://www.coachcalorie.com/how-much-exercise-to-lose-weight/

Now get our there and kick some butt.

This article was originally posted in September of last year, but that’s when most golfers were starting to store their clubs for the winter. Now that almost all of the golf courses in the country (US at least) are already open, it is time to make each golf day the best it can be.

The following actions are easy to do and can develop into habits that will help you be more prepared to enjoy the day of golf as much as the game of golf. Just try some of them. It couldn’t hurt!

The Night Before

1. Prepare your clubs the night before. Clean the grooves in the irons and wash and wipe the heads and the grips on all your clubs.

2. Make sure you have enough balls and tees, and pack a spare glove.

3. Clean your shoes and make sure all the spikes are tight.

4. Lay out the clothes you will wear the next day. Choose clothes that you will feel great in, and look the part of a PGA Pro. When you dress “dumpy” you feel “dumpy”.

5. Put your cleaned clubs, bag and pull cart (if using one) near the door or in the garage next to the car. That way you can do a last minute check in the morning, and can make sure everything is there and that you are not forgetting anything.

6. To insure a good nights sleep, don’t have a late night meal or drink coffee.

Game Day

7. Get up early in plenty of time to get showered, dressed and at the course at least 45 minutes prior to your tee off time.

8. Take a good hot shower to warm up your body, especially your legs.

9. While in the hot shower, stretch your arms to the ceiling, then stretch down and vigorously scrub your legs, while gently stretching your hamstrings.

10. When toweling off, use the towel to act as a stretching strap to move and invigorate your entire body. Stretch down to wipe your feet and legs (again, the hamstrings).

11. Get dressed and feel like a PGA Tour Pro as you prepare to leave.

12. While in the car, play music or a CD that will keep you calm, not charged up talk radio or Heavy Metal music.

13. Grip the steering wheel hard for 5 seconds then relax. Repeat 10 times. You can also use a SqueasyBall or a tennis ball to warm up your grip.

14. Park a little way away from the clubhouse so you can get in a short warm up walk.

15. If possible…avoid too much coffee so you can stay calm and “mellow”.

16. If there is a practice range, get a small bucket of balls and head to it at least 30 minutes before your scheduled tee time.

17. Do some stretching exercises (see www.golfgym.com for recommendations). Swing a weighted club if you have one.

18. Start with your wedge. Set up every shot as if you were hitting to a specific target. Use a full follow through on every shot. Move up your irons then hit just a few drivers, swinging easy and smoothly.

19. Take a few deep breaths in…hold…then exhale as you head to the first tee to meet your buddies. This will really help to calm the nerves and help you focus.

20. Now, tee up that shiny new ball, step back, choose your target, make a firm decision, get in a good golf posture and smoothly rip one right down the middle holding a great finish position.

Check out this video with a great tip on using a “10 Second Rule”. http://www.golf.com/video/10-second-swing-fix

OK…Here’s #21…Have the best time you ever had on a golf course.
Yes, you can do it!!

Now that the snow is gone from most of the country, and you have been working on your balance with the drills from last month (getting ready to tee it up for the first time this year) it is time to start working on developing more power in your golf body through golf fitness exercises.

Ask ten different Professional Golfers or Teachers where their Power comes from and they might all give a different answer.

I saw a segment on the Golf Channel where one Tour Pro swore that all his power came from his legs…that’s it…his legs. Another might say that power comes from a strong hip turn, shoulder turn, core muscles. They may all be correct regarding their own swing because they have repeated that swing hundreds of thousands of times and figured out where their personal power comes from.

For us, the average golfers, we haven’t hit as many balls or practiced as much as they have or had a personal coach to tell us where the power should come from. Here are a few simple tips that will help everyone start to develop overall strength in the muscles that are involved in the golf swing. By strengthening those areas of your golf body, you will be able to become more aware of your golf body and where your personal power should come from.

PGA Tour Professional Cameron (Cam) Tringale hosted the “Inside the PGA Tour” show on the Golf Channel last evening. They showed quite a bit of his training sessions at the Joey D Golf Academy in Jupiter, Florida. Here is a short segment where Cam is developing low back, mid back, pelvis, legs and core strength using a balance ball and a small weight.

Following are two more exercises using the balance ball, this time against a wall. The ball allows you to roll up and down in a squat position, staying in good posture, while pushing against the wall for more resistance. These movement patterns involves many of the lower body musculature that is so important in a solid posture and a powerful swing.

Here is former LPGA Pro Liz Janangelo with Balance Ball, PowerStance Loop and GolfGym Weighted Club 28. She starts with the ball centered in the middle of her lower back, legs slightly bent (with the resistance loop around her legs) and a wide grip on the club. While pushing the ball firmly against the wall, move down into a squat position with the legs at a 90 degree bend and the club lifted directly above the shoulders. Hold this position for 15 seconds and return to start position. Repeat this movement 4 – 6 times. Another way to develop strength and endurance is to try to hold this position up to 1 minute.

Here is PGA Tour Pro Fredrik Jacobson with a variation of the squat above with Liz. Freddie uses two dumbbells to do bicep curls on the way up. Freddie is in great condition and is using 20 lb dumbbells. Start with 5 or 10 lbs to get used to the movement pattern first. Repeat this set 6 – 8 times or as many as possible staying in good form. Poor form will do you no good.

These exercises will help to develop strength in the upper and lower body which will definitely help in posture control and power from the feet up.

Good Luck with these!

Next up…Flexibility!

As with any fitness and conditioning program, there are two important points to keep in mind when using the PowerSwing Trainer:

1) choose the right resistance for the muscles you want to work and
2) know your current physical condition and strength objectives.
For example, individuals just beginning a conditioning program or coming out of rehab will want to start at a lower resistance level. Likewise, you probably would not be able to effectively complete certain exercises at higher resistance levels. The guiding advice is to choose the correct resistance levels and exercises to work your muscles effectively and to avoid injuries. Based on our 20 years of selling the PowerSwing Trainer we can share a few guidelines:

Develop a Wide TakeAway for a Longer Overall Swing.

This drill was inspired by an instructor at the Jim McLean Golf Schools at Doral in Miami Florida. Her name is Alana Swain. Her video tip was posted on the Revolution Golf website. She has many students who are not clear on the Arc or Plane of the takeaway and the downswing. Many think they should be the same. Her explanation of the difference was so good, that I shot this video and demonstrated how the GolfGym PowerSwing Trainer can help all golfers improve their strength and achieve a wider takeaway and backswing to produce a much longer swing which in turn will produce More Distance and Power.

GolfGym Swing Tip #1 “Begin With The Follow Through”

Veteran Golf Instructor Arlen Bento Jr. teams up with GolfGym creator, Ken Pierce to offer a Golf Swing Tip and Drill to help all golfers get to a strong finished position in their golf swing. Arlen’s unique teaching methods combined with the GolfGym PowerSwing Trainer, and Ken Pierce’s desire for improvement, makes for a great drill everyone can perform and learn from. This is an easy to perform golf fitness drill.

In this video, Arlen demonstrates what he calls The “Scrunch Drill”. After working on the golf swing with #1 the “Begin With the Follow Through” drill, then #2 the “Toe Drill”, Arlen takes us into the movement from short back swing to impact then to follow through. Arlen demonstrates a drill to get to the top of the back swing in the proper sequence. In this GolfGym Swing Tip #5, “The Transition”, Arlen Bento, Jr. and Ken Pierce demonstrate a great drill that will help you transition from the back swing down into the impact position. This “Down” or “Drop” movement is critical to creating a more powerful golf swing and will help you to avoid the dreaded “over the top” movement that so many golfers struggle with. Arlen demonstrates how this is a classic movement performed by the great Byron Nelson. It is also a great movement in which to incorporate the GolfGym PowerSwing Trainer to improve your golf fitness.

PGA & Champions Tour Player Tom Pernice, Jr

Tom is playing great and his fitness is a big component. Many amateur golfers can’t even stand up straight on one foot for more than a few seconds. In the following pictures you see Tom in the PGA Tour Fitness Trailer not only balancing on one foot, but he is performing an entire movement pattern simulating a full golf swing.

Notice how far Tom rotates his shoulders both in the backswing and follow through. He even turns his head on the follow through…still balancing on just one foot. Now, that’s body control folks. A key to performing this exercise well is to focus on one point on the floor while standing straight up on one leg with your hands hanging off to your sides. Then when you get comfortable in that position, start to lower yourself into a golf posture placing your hands in front of you simulating holding a club. When you can go from straight to a golf posture several times, add the swing. I can tell you this, if you try to do the complete movement pattern right off the bat, you may be very frustrated. This exercise will not only challenge your balance, but work every stabilizing muscle in your lower body. Take your time with this and it will pay off for you. Oh, one more thing, do it on the other leg too! Good Luck. The GolfGym Team.

PGA Tour Player Jason Gore

Hip Turn with Medicine Ball
This exercise is dealing with lower-body rotation. The difference is that you will perform this exercise while holding a medicine ball between your knees. This means your hips will go through a slightly reduced range of motion. Without the ball, for example, you may find that you are able to turn and drop your right leg to the side without your left shoulder coming up off the floor. When you try to get your left leg to stack on top of your right leg, perhaps your shoulder will pull off the floor.

Here, because the ball is preventing your left leg from being able to stack directly on top of the right leg, you may find your body able to perform the move properly. The medicine ball will also strengthen your hips, spinal rotators, and core.

Now, you’re dealing with eight pounds of resistance while you’re doing it. You also have to keep a firm squeeze on the medicine ball to hold it in place. Just about every known law of physics will back me up when I say that you definitely don’t want to loosen your grip on the ball when you’re in the knees-straight-up position.

How to do it:
Lie back on the floor or on a mat with your legs bent and a medicine ball squeezed between your knees. Place your arms out to your sides, palms down, to help stabilize you. Raise your legs by flexing at the hips. Your thighs should be perpendicular to the floor and your lower legs should be parallel to the floor. Both your hips and knees should be flexed at ninety degrees.

Slowly drop your hips to the right side until the outer part of your right leg touches the floor. Try to keep your left shoulder from coming up off the floor. Hold for a beat, then slowly return to the starting position. Don’t drop the ball—it will negatively impact more than just your golf game!

Hold the knees-straight- up position for a beat, then slowly drop your knees to the left side. Try to get the outer part of your left leg to touch the floor without your right shoulder lifting off the floor. Hold for a beat, then return to the starting position to complete the rep.

Do as many reps as you are capable of doing well. Doing three of them well is better than doing six poorly. You will definitely feel the separation and the rotation. Good Luck.

Testimonials:

“My fitness trainer (who has a 1.6 index) recommended that I purchase and use a GolfGym Powerswing. I have had two shoulder surgeries in the past and no longer lift weights. My objective was to increase my endurance and improve my golf game. The GolfGym is great device. The Master’s Edition contains a golf club training grip and 3 resistance bands (light, medium and heavy). Within 2 weeks of steady use I have noticed that my endurance has improved and I am rotating around my back leg rather than swaying. I also feel strong late in the round when I normally start getting sloppy. My index has dropped from a 12.9 to an 11.7 (and getting lower). I attribute this to the GolfGym and a walking/jogging program.
After 4 or 5 weeks of using the light (yellow) band I moved up to the medium (red) band. My workout includes a full power swing, a power turn (both feet) an external rotation (both sides) and a two-handed overhead pull. The manual includes decent diagrams for these and other exercises.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.”
- Steven – Golf Enthusiast
- Georgia

“One of the pieces of equipment that I am excited to use in the updated PGA Tour fitness trailers is the PowerBandz and PowerSwing Trainer tubing products by Golf Gym. The fact that each handle on the tubing is independent of the other handle on the PowerBandz is an extremely important benefit that is exclusive to the Golf Gym product. My tour players won’t use another tubing product after experiencing the effectiveness and superiority of these modalities.
PGA tour coach Joey D has more than a decade of experience working with the world’s top golfers. He is now sharing his knowledge on effective golf training with the rest of us through these innovative products”.
Dr. Craig Davies
PGA Tour Coach and Golf Performance Therapist

“Exactly what I was looking for — a golf-specific, portable gym. It’s perfect, every serious golfer should have this product. My game is improving dramatically. I have fewer bad shots, more consistent swings, increased distance, improved balance, strength, endurance — particularly good for lower back. Thank You!”
- Fred S.
- Merritt Island, Fla.

“As a result of illness I lost a good amount of my strength and flexibility resulting in affecting my game. The GolfGym PowerSwing Trainer Helped regain the strength and flexibility and also lengthened my drives by up to 20 yards. This is a big deal since I am over 70.”

It makes perfect sense. Snow on Ground…No Golf!

However, if you are snowed in and you think of it as having the opportunity to make a Lemon Snow Cone from a Lemon…it takes on a whole new meaning.

For those of you not having chosen to live in year round sunny Florida, California, Arizona and the like, winter is a time for hibernation, clubs collecting dust in the garage and watching lots of TV sports…like football, basketball and golf (being played in the non-hibernating parts of the country).

If you are serious about golf, you should look at the winter season as a sort of “Training Camp” for the upcoming season starting in the Spring. We won’t call it Spring Training because technically you are not training in the spring. Moving on…

Here are some easy tips for you to get started so as to be ready to perform your best in the coming golf season. Over the next few weeks we will be covering Balance, Power, Strength, Flexibility and Rotation.

This week: Balance

Many amateur golfers can’t even stand up straight on one foot for more than a few seconds. Here you see PGA and Champions Tour player Tom Pernice in the PGA Tour Fitness Trailer not only balancing on one foot, but performing an entire movement pattern simulating a full golf swing.

Notice how far Tom rotates his shoulders both in the backswing and follow through. He even turns his head on the follow through…still balancing on just one foot. Now, that’s body control folks.A key to performing this exercise well is to focus on one point on the floor while standing straight up on one leg with your hands hanging off to your sides.

Coach Joey D – 3 Cone Balance Drill

Place three cones, plastic cups, sneakers…anything that you can reach to and touch on the floor that is about 4″ – 6″above the floor. Balancing on one foot, reach down and touch the objects just as you see Joey performing the drill. Notice that Joey’s head is still as if in a golf swing posture, even though he is rotating to both sides while still on one foot. Try to complete 3 full sets from start to finish…then build up to 10 sets. Your mind and body will work hard on these.

In the next post we will show some easy exercises to help develop more Power.
