Congratulations to Inbee Park & Kiradech Aphibarnrat on their wins this past weekend! Inbee Park is the World #1 Woman Player, and won her 7th Major Championship, the Ricoh Women’s British Open on Sunday. Kiradech Aphibarnrat is from Thailand and won his second European Tour title of the year on Sunday when he defeated Robert Karlsson on the final hole to clinch the Paul Lawrie Matchplay.
These golfers are two great examples of, and make my point that, GOLF FITNESS IS NOT MEASURED BY YOUR WAISTLINE. Golf Fitness is based on your performance on the golf course. It is based on your ability to perform golf shots consistently and repeatedly…not whether you have six pack abs.
Someone reading this post might think that I am being insensitive to these two young golfers. Actually, my theory that Golf Fitness is not measured by your waistline could not be more valid than for these two professional golfers.
I wrote an eBook called “Golf Fitness – What Is It Really“. (Click here to get a copy). In it I expressed my opinion that overall fitness is good for everyone, but that some of us are not interested in sit ups and squats in order to look more fit (although squats are really important in keeping the lower body strong and stable). Their interest is in being “golf fit”. Golf Fit is the ability to swing the golf club with stability, flexibility and consistency. That is developed from golf specific exercises and stretches.
If a golfer wants to do more of a total body workout….that’s great! We offer many workouts on our website. We even broke them down to just 3 minutes to make is easier and simple.
Please don’t misunderstand my position here. I workout regularly and believe that overall fitness, keeping your weight under control, and eating more healthy foods will have a very positive affect on your longevity and your health in general. However, I am breaking it down to being able to play golf at your best…even though you are calorically challenged.
I congratulate these two great golfers. Their ability to play golf at the highest level on earth is a blessing, AND they work very hard at it. Continued success to both of them!
Instead of thinking that in order to play better golf, you will have to join a gym and workout like Rory McIlroy (without the soccer injury), think more of starting some kind of swing training program that you will enjoy (you can find help here on the GolfGym website). Start….then be consistent….it will become a habit….and you will see the benefits in your play and your score. That is a very good place to start.
